Uncommon Sense

“Originality often consists in linking up ideas whose connection was not previously suspected,” W.I.B. Beveridge, The Art of Scientific Investigation, 1957

“The role of the imagination is to create new meanings & to discover connections that, even if obvious, seem to escape detection,” Paul Rand

CONVERGENCE – smart businesses use various advances in seemingly disparate areas to create a competitive advantage

The concept of “the art of uncommon sense” involves using intuitive, creative, & insightful thinking to make connections between seemingly unrelated matters, things, or factors. It contrasts with common sense, which relies on widely accepted, straightforward reasoning & conventional wisdom. Uncommon sense, on the other hand, involves seeing beyond the obvious, making unconventional links, & deriving innovative solutions or ideas.

The ubiquitous nature of human knowledge & the application of powerful technology tools to seemingly unconnected data, interdisciplinary insights & creativity coupled with imagination will provide many of the solutions to the challenges we face.  This is the Second Renaissance sweet spot.

Systems thinking taking precedence over siloed, isolated parts of an ecosystem & the recognition of interdependencies & feedback loops, will open the possibilities that have been limited by conventional, linear thought.

Reframing your business choices and discussions to focus on investment & not cost discussions will result in very different outcomes.

For example, because most IT strategies treat technology in isolation and they tend to be internally focused on system & process issues & not customers!

Within organisations, beware those ‘leaders’ who revert to process & procedure – they only do so because they have learnt that they are unable to express vision, collective effort & benefit, that is meaningful to their people & customers.

Additionally, the discovery of the structure of DNA involved uncommon sense as Watson & Crick combined information from chemistry, biology, & X-ray diffraction patterns.

The art of uncommon sense is about transcending traditional boundaries of thinking, seeing the unseen connections, & fostering a mindset that combines intuition, creativity, & deep insight to solve problems & generate new ideas.
